While skiing, hiking, biking and fishing draw people to Steamboat Springs, the community is the reason people aren’t able to leave. Discovered by James H. Crawford who first arrived in Steamboat on snowshoes, Steamboat Springs was signed into existence in 1874 with an expedition consisting of James H. Crawford, Perry A. Burgess, William E. Walton, William G. Mellen and Joseph G. Coberly and families. Wilderness areas, creeks and neighborhoods are still named after these brave people. Living amidst the Native Americans during a tense time, they befriended the Ute Indians and created a community of tolerance and openness that still exists today.
Instead of flag raising ceremonies, Steamboat Springs today offers numerous free events to bring our residents together. A few of these include the annual Cardboard Classic, where cars built of cardboard are raced down the ski mountain. Winter Carnival in its 95th year includes ski jumping competitions, tubing parties and a parade where Lincoln Ave. is covered with snow. Fireworks explode to mark the celebrations of New Years, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Fourth of July. Bud Light sponsors the ‘Rock the ‘Boat’ winter concert series in Gondola Square. In the summer, a Free Concert Series brings top bands to Howelson Hill. An Easter egg hunt, also at Howelson Hill, brings out the child in everybody.
Steamboat prides itself on having a small-town feel with big-city culture.
For those with a love of chamber music, jazz, country, rock and bluegrass, Strings in the Mountain brings some of the most talented artists in the country to town. Artwalk Fridays connect local galleries with appetizers and cocktails as painters, sculptors and photographers prove that big cities don’t have the market on incredible talent.
For food lovers, spring and fall bring discounts at some of the best restaurants in town, including Café Diva, Mahogany Ridge Bar and Grill and Giovanni’s to name a few.
Steamboat prides itself on having a small-town feel with big-city culture. More than just a town, Steamboat Springs is a family.
