Snowshoeing in Steamboat Springs

Snowshoeing in Steamboat Springs

When the snow falls, most people hit the ski slopes on Mt. Werner, but more and more people seek solitude away from the lines and the lifts by snowshoeing in Steamboat. Just like every other activity in Steamboat, snowshoeing opportunities are plentiful. Wherever you can hike in the summer, you can snowshoe in the winter.

Here are a few of our favorite places to explore:

Spring Creek: This is a local’s favorite, where you meander along the creek, pass open pools of waters and waterfalls and eventually head into the backcountry. You can go as far as Buffalo Pass if you’re ready for a full day hike and feel free to bring your dog. This is a great gentle grade hike for beginners or those getting acclimated to Steamboat.

Emerald Mountain: Crisscrossing the main road up Emerald are numerous bike trails that are deserted in the winter, leaving snowshoers numerous routes to explore. As you ascend, the town will unfold below with excellent views of the Sleeping Giant and Mt. Werner. Catch the sunset from up here and you’ll fall in love.

Rabbit Ears Pass: Rabbit Ears Pass has been divided into two sides during the winter – one for snowshoers and cross-country skiers and one for snowmobilers. Hike up to the famous Rabbit Ears, or explore any one of the many trails that loop through the forest. Stop by the Forest Service office for more information on trails.
