Skiing in Steamboat Springs

Skiing is what Steamboat is famous for. Mount Werner, a world class ski mountain is situated in the heart of town, but what most people don’t know is there’s also skiing and ski jumping at Howelson Hill and Olympic trials are held here. For those who prefer cross-country skiing in Steamboat, we’ve got the place for you.

Skiing in Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Ski Resort/Mount Werner:  What can we say?  World class skiing with Steamboat’s famed champagne powder!  Check out the ‘kids ski free’ program where kids under 12 ski free with parents or grandparents with a pass of 5 days or more. Not only that, the mountain covers 2,965 acres for every level skier. The top of the mountain reaches 10,568 feet, giving it a 3,668 foot vertical rise. With average snowfall of well over 300 inches, there’s no reason to not explore this mountain.

165 trails snake across the mountain with a terrain park and Superpipe running 450 long and 56-feet wide.

No matter what your skill level, from powder skiing to tree skiing to cruising the groomers, skiing in Steamboat at Mt. Werner is a skier’s paradise.

Howelson Hill:  Why ski here when Mt. Werner’s only a few minutes away? Because Howelson Hill has turned out over 64 Olympians and has the largest natural ski jumping complex in North America. If you don’t want to head down the jump, consider eating dinner at Cottonwood Grill or having a drink at Sunpie’s Bistro while watching trained athletes attack the jump. Skiing on Howelson is much more affordable than Mt. Werner and has 15 trails and stays open weekdays to 6:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. for some night skiing.

Cross Country:  Test your skills on 21 km of cross country ski trails in Steamboat’s backcountry leading out of Howelson Hill and into Emerald Mountain, or head to the Ski Touring Center near the mountain with 10 km of groomed trails for skating and classic skiing.  Lake Catamount, about 10 miles out of town, offers groomed trails through acres of ranchland.
