Biking isn’t just about getting into the backcountry. Steamboat’s attraction as a Road Riding Mecca is quickly becoming apparent. In 2011 Steamboat was the first town to have the privilege of hosting both a Stage Start and Stage Finish for the Pro Cycling Challenge and was the only town to do so. With extreme elevation gain up Rabbit Ears Pass or relaxing rides past open fields and entrancing rivers and lakes, road rides in Steamboat Springs are something the whole family can do or a challenge athletes can take on to test their strength in Colorado’s high country.
For an easy ride, start out downtown Steamboat and head over to River Road or CO Rd, 14 on the far side of the Yampa River near Howelson Hill. Stay under the shadow of Emerald Mountain before the terrain opens up into grassy knolls and open fields. Stay on River road for a nine-mile loop to 131. Turn left here and follow 131 back to Highway 40, which meets up with the bike path or loop back to CO Rd 14F just a half mile short of Highway 40. For a slightly shorter ride, cut across Co Rd 22 to reach CO Rd 131.
Twenty Mile Road – This long and winding road has all sorts of possibilities for road rides in Steamboat Springs. Access Twenty Mile Road by turning left at the library at the west side of downtown (13th Street/RCR 33). You can take the road to the coal mine, turning left onto CR27 heading towards Oak Creek where you can loop back to Steamboat by 131 to Highway 40, or cut back to RCR 14 to go the back way along River Road (this is a challenging ride, approximately 50 miles), or you can take a detour on some of the dirt trails on Emerald Mountain.
For those just wanting a gentle ride, consider the bike path that runs from the mountain to downtown with just a few gentle hills.
If you want to push your limits, head up Rabbit Ears pass, for a 110-mile “century” ride. Start out east on Highway 40, climbing up the pass, then enjoy the downhill and curves past stands of aspens, forests or fir, lakes and wildlife. Keep going until you reach CO Hwy 134 (before Kremmling) and turn right here, where you top out over Gore Pass. From here you’ll turn right onto CO Hwy 131 heading towards Steamboat.
