Steamboat Springs was founded on the site of 7 hot springs. The Tread Of Pioneers Museum offers a walking tour of these springs. The town was named by two trappers back in the 1800′s who thought they heard a steamboat chugging up the river. It turned out to be a bubbling hot spring.
There are two main hot springs in Steamboat Springs which are open to visitors: Strawberry hot springs and the hot springs pools at the Steamboat Health and Recreation Center.
Strawberry Hot Springs in Steamboat Springs is a twenty-minute drive outside of town on dirt roads that need a four-wheel drive vehicle in winter or a shuttle service, but the effort is worth it. When you reach these Steamboat hot springs you will be greeted by an outdoor expanse of sky, stars and forests. The three different pools have temperatures that vary from very hot to lukewarm and if one is daring, they can always jump in the river that flows below for a quick cool-off. Clothing is optional at night, but required during the day.
There are also private pools to soak in that accommodate 2-3 people and the option for massages and nightly stays, where you get the hot springs all to yourself when they close to the public for the night.
The Hot Springs at Steamboat Health & Recreation Center offers a family friendly atmosphere at all hours of the day. They provide a fitness room, swimming pool, slides and daycare alongside hot springs pools that are a favorite in the wintertime.
