For a mountain town, Steamboat Springs has a surprising amount of culture from Opera to Piknik Theatre Festivals to Flick n’ Floats, Art Walks, bridge clubs, book clubs, mah-jongg groups, writers groups, open mike poetry and more. People who are drawn to Steamboat range from those wanting a good environment for their children to grow up in to artists, sculptors and writers who are looking for an escape from big cities.
Here are just a few of Steamboat Springs’ cultural activities:
Art Walk Fridays – The first Friday of every month galleries open their doors with wine and appetizers for locals and visitors to discover the latest works of talented artists. From Red Gallery at the Steamboat Sheraton to the locally owned Artists’ Gallery downtown, peruse oil paintings, bronze sculptures, photography and more at one of our galleries, or at one of our local businesses and restaurants that support the arts. There’s no better way feel the heart of Steamboat than by strolling through the inspiration of the artists that live here.
Strings on the Mountain – Originally an outdoor venue on Mt. Werner, Strings on the Mountain has grown and transformed over the years to a world-class venue that hosts musical talent from around the world. Strings Music Pavilion is Steamboat’s premier music venue. The award winning Music Pavilion seats 560 people and offers holiday concerts in the winter and over 80 performances in the summer months from June 23rd through August 17th.
African Dance – Started by Robin Getter more than 25 years ago, the Steamboat African Dance & Drum Ensemble continues to grow as an all-volunteer artist group that studies traditional African dance and music under renowned teachers from Guinea, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal, Congo and Zimbabwe. Steamboat has become a regular stop for West African master dancers and drummers who come to teach wildly popular community workshops. The Steamboat African Dance & Drum Ensemble is an affiliate of the Steamboat Dance Theater and a strong supporter in its efforts to bring dance education, performance and participation to the Steamboat Springs community.
Flick N Float – What do hot springs and cultural films have in common? Not a lot unless you’re enjoying a multi-cultural film while floating in the Old Town Hot Springs.
Bike in Theater – As a way to reduce pollution and encourage exercise, the Bike-in-theater on Emerald Mountain is popular with visitors and locals alike. Bring the entire family and a blanket and sit back under the stars.
Perry Mansfield: Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp offers the world’s premier summer training program for artists ages 8–college. Students from across the country and around the globe take part in world premier productions in both theater and dance and have the opportunity to study with some of the industry’s most prestigious instructors. At the end of the program, Perry Mansfield opens up productions to the public, where visitors are treated not only to student work, but to readings by some of this country’s top playwrights, to dance performances unseen anywhere else and theater that rivals the best New York playhouses.
Great American Laughingstock Theater – This outdoor theater has two purposes – to make theater accessible to every age and income group and to revive the tradition of walking to and sharing theater in outdoor spaces. Set in Spring Creek, this repertory theater was started in 1971. Featuring a musical, an original work and a Shakespeare production over three nights each weekend in July, guests are welcome to bring their own food, drink and even pets. Local actors join forces with students of New Zealand’s finest dramatic conservatories, taking theater out of the box, building international and cultural exchange and enhancing the level of performing arts in the Steamboat Springs community. Actors also teach classes for children during the summer.
Summer/Winter Concert Series – It’s not hard to get Steamboat locals outside. Offering a free summer and winter concert series has locals out in droves no matter what the weather to listen to country, bluegrass, rock and more at the base of Mt. Werner in the winter or at Howelson Hill in the summer time.
