Backcountry Skiing and Riding in Steamboat Springs

Despite the five peaks, excellent powder and 2,965 acres of Mt. Werner, some snow junkies just can’t seem to get enough powder or vertical for their liking surrounded by visitors figuring out how to use their skis or boards.

For those who want something more challenging or a day away from the crowds and the ski lifts, Steamboat offers insane backcountry skiing and riding opportunities. Whether you choose to go alone or with a backcountry guide, make sure you have an avalanche beacon and know how to gauge snow quality to stay safe. With over 500 inches of powder on a good year, there’s no lack of snow to be found.

Some of the most popular routes head up off Rabbit Ears Pass, where you can connect with Mt. Werner. Veer off the road well traveled to untouched routes off the mountain that take you down the side of the Fish Creek Falls trail, or make a reservation to stay at Three Forks Ranch where they offer 1,100 vertical feet with their own runs, groomed slopes and a max of 16 people on the mountain at a time.

Another great place to explore is Seedhouse Road close to Hahn’s Peak. The forty minute drive will take you to the town of Clark where you can unload your snowmobiles and hit well marked trails and ski some of Steamboat’s highest mountain peaks (over 11,000 feet).

Buffalo Pass, about a 20-minute drive out of town is popular with snowmobilers and backcountry skiers, where a little research can have you in your own powder heaven.

If you don’t have the equipment or the snowmobiles, consider a guided trip with Steamboat Powdercats where guests are transported on snowmobiles to untouched snow paradise where they can lay first tracks without having to fight for them on the first gondola ride of the day.

No matter what your preference for skiing or riding – extreme mountains or quiet hills, there’s plenty of Steamboat backcountry for everyone. If you want to know more about Steamboat’s secret powder paradise, call Steamboat Expert.
