Reason Number 2
Lifestyle – Very few places have something for everyone, but if you love being outside, Steamboat is the place for you. From summer to winter, nature has crafted mountains, rivers and waterfalls to entertain every personality.
Steamboat is nestled between mountains in a wide open valley. Unlike other Colorado ski resorts that have a highway running through them, the tranquility of Steamboat is a draw in itself. Not only that, but with direct flights from Houston, Dallas and New York in the winter, it’s still very accessible.
In Steamboat residents leave their cars and houses unlocked. There is a trust between one another. Kids ride the free city/skier bus by themselves and play in any one of the numerous parks without adult supervision. Steamboat is reminiscent of a world gone by where parents didn’t have to worry about kids exploring their independence.
In the winter, Steamboat’s world famous champagne powder blankets the mountain and has brought out 22 Olympic athletes. Known as Ski Town USA, the talk of the town turns to powder conditions as soon as the mountain opens. There’s also snowshoeing, cross country skiing and hot air balloon rides. Hot springs let you soak in healing waters while frosty flakes melt against your face. With many more three wire winters to come, or winters that reach the third wire on a fence, the playground of snow calls.
In the spring and summer there are tons of activities for every one. Mt. Werner transforms into a biker and hiker’s paradise. Within a few minutes from town, you can be climbing the ears on Rabbit Ears Pass, or reaching 13,000+ foot Mt. Zirkel. For a more relaxing day, tubing down the river or fly fishing lets you kick back. Free music festivals bring the town together as does the rodeo. With clean air and clear skies, horseback riding or just sitting in your backyard sipping lemonade every day is the perfect day to enjoy the scenic beauty of Steamboat.

Reason Number 1
Community – When you ask anyone why they moved to Steamboat, they’ll tell you it’s the community. While Colorado has an abundance of ski towns only Steamboat integrates the past with the present, keeping the down home feel of days gone by.
Founded as a trapping and ranching community, vestiges of the first settlers can be found all over town from the names of streets, to the Tread of Pioneer Museum to the ranchers that still make their living off the land. Skis were first introduced as a means of getting around in the winter, not as a sport. However that changed with people like Carl Howelson and Buddy Werner and now Steamboat boasts world class skiing facilities.. Because of how remote Steamboat used to be without the direct flights it now has, people that came to Steamboat came to stay. And they still do.
Steamboat is one of the few towns where people say hi to each other on the street. You bump into people you know in the grocery store or at a favorite restaurant. Even as the city is growing the historical society is making sure Steamboat doesn’t lose the flavor that has always attracted real people with common interests of the outdoors, conversation and community.
