Biking in the Boat

May 5, 2008

People often ask me what it is like to live in a resort town.  Today was a perfect example of why I love it in Steamboat, even in the offseason.   I was able to do three of my favorite things: bike, spend time outdoors. and work.

I had to drop some documents off with a client who lives on a small ranch just 7 miles out of town.  It was a beautiful sunny day, so I hopped on my bike and pedaled up and down hills (pretty small ones) to meet with my clients.  As I huffed and puffed up the hills, then zipped down, I realized how lucky I was to spend an part of my “working” day enjoying the outdoors.

My route took me along the Yampa River, which meanders through our valley.  I came upon a local rancher riding his horse along the road.  You sure don’t see that in the big city!

If you are in town and want a slightly more challenging ride than the bike-path, consider a loop along River Road.  There is little traffic and the scenery is spectacular – the river flows through rich hay meadows.  Cows and horses graze and you might even see an eagle soaring over head.
