Laura’s favorite hike
April 21, 2008
Today I spoke with a friend of mine who is a big hiker in Steamboat. When I asked her about her favorite hike near town, she immediately answered: “Fish Creek Falls!” She loves the steepness and the fact that she can get a good workout easily. Fish Creek Falls is a park about 3 miles from town. There is a beautiful waterfall and some easy paved paths with handicap access to lookout and picnic spots. For those who prefer more of a challenge, follow the main trail for about 10 miles steeply uphill to Long lake. Laura did admit that she has never made it all the way to the lake!
I prefer a more mellow hike. Laura suggests Spring Creek. The trail head is in town. The trail follows the creek and her dog always has a place to cool off.![]()
This trail is also popular for mountain bikers.
End of Ski Season!
April 6, 2008
Today was the last day of skiing until the fall. It’s always one of those bittersweet days. Yes we are ready to move on to biking and hiking, but no we are never ready to put away the skis. Especially difficult when there is sooooo much snow. I skied all over the mountain and the snow coverage is great – no dirt or rocks! In fact last night there was another 3 inches of snow!
As usual, many skiers and riders were dressed in goofy constumes – everything from formal suits and ties to characters from The Wizard of Oz. It’s a little disconcerting to be making some great turns on High Noon and to have a lion schuss by on a snowboard! Also there were tons of little kids as tickets were free to all students in the local school district.
This morning Ski Corp. employees were still digging out the massive splash-pool at the base. It was full of cold water just waiting for some brave souls to ski across (and in) it! No, I did not join the fun! I prefer to be on snow!
I for one, will be looking forward to next year with anticipation.
Ski Times Square Redevelopment
April 4, 2008
The Atira Group and D.C.-based Cafritz Interests are partnering to raze and redevelop the buildings around the base of the Steamboat Ski Area. It’s official: Demolition of Ski Time Square will happen all at once, and it will start this summer.
“What we’re excited about is really using an integrated approach to having a vibrant, mixed-use property, looking at how all these are going to flow together,” Mathews Mark, vice president of development at Atira, said. “We have a world-class mountain; now we want a world-class base area,” The ski-in/out project is expected to include a 5-star hotel and high-end residential and commercial spaces.
